Troubleshoot Kratky hydroponics by checking nutrient level, root air gap, light leaks, pH, water quality, roots and plant demand.
Root problems
Healthy roots are commonly pale when young, though nutrient products can stain them. Slimy roots, unpleasant odour, rapid wilting or widespread browning deserve investigation. Check temperature, oxygen access and whether roots have been submerged too deeply.
Nutrient level problems
If the solution falls too quickly, the container may be undersized for the crop or conditions. If you top up a mature Kratky plant, retain the established air space instead of refilling to the original starting level.
Algae and light leaks
Green growth usually means light is reaching nutrient solution. Block light at the container sides, lid and planting opening, then clean affected surfaces where practical.
Slow or yellow growth
Yellowing or slow growth is not automatically a nutrient deficiency. Check roots, pH, nutrient strength, water quality, temperature and light before adding extra fertiliser.
FAQ
Does Kratky need an air pump?
No. A conventional Kratky setup is passive and relies on the air space above the nutrient solution. If you add continuous aeration, the system is operating more like DWC.
Should I keep topping up the reservoir?
It depends on crop duration and container size. For longer crops, topping up may be needed, but preserve an air gap around the upper roots rather than restoring the original full level.
